While scholar officials were studying Confucian works and "white collared", the Jianghu were the blue collared workforce that was apprenticed and lived in a lifestyle with utmost loyalty to the master. The latter would take on only a handful students and they formed a relationship as close as family. The student would not pay for his teaching but take on chores in the household and later care for the aging master.
